Jennifer Lawrence is launching Mes°, her new hair care brand. Here’s what to know about the debut collection.
Jennifer Lawrence has always had a certain ease about her, whether she’s walking a red carpet or stepping out in New York wearing something that inevitably ends up on everyone’s mood board. Her personal style has become a source of inspiration, particularly for those who appreciate clothes that feel chic without looking overly styled. Now, the actress is bringing that same sensibility into beauty with Mes°, a new hair care brand. It’s an interesting move for Lawrence, who has largely stayed away from the celebrity beauty business until now. And while another famous face entering an already crowded category might not sound particularly surprising, there’s something about Lawrence’s approach to personal style that makes this venture worth watching.
The name, pronounced “mess,” is a playful nod to the reality that good hair rarely stays perfect for very long. Lawrence developed Mes° alongside Jasmina Aganovic, an MIT-trained chemical and biological engineer and founder of biotechnology company Arcaea. Their partnership began after Lawrence watched one of Aganovic’s TED Talks and became fascinated by the possibility of using biology to create better beauty products. Having spent years in makeup chairs, with her hair repeatedly coloured, styled, heated and transformed for film roles, Lawrence was particularly interested in finding a way to make hair look good without constantly putting it through more work. The result is a brand built around what Mes° calls “Unbothered Beauty,” essentially the idea that your hair routine should make life easier rather than become another thing to manage. There’s quite a bit of science behind the formulas, but the philosophy itself is refreshingly simple: fewer steps, better results and hair that still looks good a few days after washing.
The debut collection is surprisingly compact, with just three products designed to address some of the most familiar hair frustrations. There’s the Multitask Repair Mask ($52), a treatment made with olive squalane and a lipid complex that can be used for five minutes, left on overnight or even worn to create a glossy, slicked-back hairstyle. The Good Roots Volume Mist ($34) is designed to lift flat roots while helping manage excess scalp oil, making it particularly appealing for anyone trying to stretch the time between washes. Then there’s the Off-Duty Restyling Serum ($44), perhaps the most intriguing of the three, which combines a lightweight oil and serum to smooth frizz, bring back shine and help revive yesterday’s hairstyle without starting from scratch. Rather than introducing an entire bathroom shelf of shampoos, conditioners and treatments, Mes° is starting with products that serve more than one purpose. It’s a practical approach, and one that feels particularly relevant at a time when beauty routines seem to be getting longer and increasingly complicated.
Of course, the celebrity beauty space is hardly short on competition, and Lawrence is entering a hair care market where everyone from Beyoncé to established salon brands is promising healthier, shinier hair. What makes Mes° interesting is that it isn't necessarily selling the idea of having Jennifer Lawrence’s hair. Instead, it seems to be borrowing from her personality, that slightly irreverent, relaxed attitude that has made her such an appealing figure in fashion. There’s also something reassuring about a celebrity beauty brand that acknowledges the inconvenience of maintaining a hairstyle in the first place. Whether the products live up to their claims will ultimately matter more than the name attached to them, but the concept is certainly appealing. If Mes° can genuinely make a blowout last a little longer, bring life back to second-day hair and make styling feel less like a chore, it could find a loyal audience well beyond Lawrence’s fans. The collection is available now exclusively through mesbeauty.com, and we're curious to see where she takes it next. Are you interested in trying Mes°, or are you feeling a little celebrity beauty fatigue?
