Conner Ives’ coat is already a celebrity favourite. This autumn and winter, it will be everywhere.
It is easy to see why Conner Ives’ Demi Couture Reconstituted Vintage Fur and Silk Robe has become such an obsession. The black silk, floral embroidery and pale fur trim make it feel like a brilliant vintage find, except it still feels fresh and current. It is rich, a little romantic and very fun, with the sort of detail that makes even the simplest outfit feel far more interesting.
Kate Moss gave us a very good example of why this coat is about to be everywhere. She wore it outside the Ritz Paris in January, arriving in the city for Paris Fashion Week in blue jeans, suede boots and dark sunglasses. She did not save it for a ball or pile on lots of accessories. She just let the coat do its thing. Jennifer Lawrence took it in a totally different direction. She wore the same Conner Ives coat to the Die, My Love Headline Gala at the 69th BFI London Film Festival, held at the Royal Festival Hall. Draped around her arms over a vintage 2005 Armani Privé halter gown, it brought a soft, cosy touch to a very polished red carpet look. Seeing both Kate and Jennifer wear it makes the appeal even clearer. One made it feel perfect for an afternoon in Paris, while the other made it feel right at home at a film premiere.
You could wear it over a tiny black dress for dinner, with strappy heels, or just with your favourite worn in jeans and a t-shirt. It would make a plain white t-shirt feel like a proper look. The robe shape keeps it loose and easy, so it never feels too formal or fussy. Conner gives vintage materials a new life, turning them into pieces that feel easy enough for every day but still special enough for a fancy dinner out. This is the kind of coat you keep forever, lend to friends only if you really trust them, and still get excited to wear years later.
