Pierpaolo Piccioli's first couture collection for Balenciaga was never going to be about replacing the past. Instead, it felt like the beginning of a new conversation. While respecting Cristóbal Balenciaga's extraordinary legacy, Piccioli brought his own sense of romance, color, and humanity to the house, creating a collection that felt emotional rather than imposing. It was a debut that looked forward without forgetting where it came from.
One of the biggest shifts came through the silhouette. Cristóbal Balenciaga's architectural approach was still present, but Piccioli softened it with flowing draping, sweeping capes, and sculptural gowns that moved with surprising lightness. There was an ease to the collection that made even the grandest couture pieces feel approachable. Instead of relying on exaggerated volume alone, the focus was on proportion, movement, and beautifully considered construction.
Color played an equally important role. Rather than the restrained palette many associate with Balenciaga, Piccioli introduced rich jewel tones, vibrant fuchsia, emerald green, saffron yellow, and vivid blues that immediately brought warmth and optimism to the runway. The collection felt joyful without losing the precision that defines couture. Feather embroidery, hand embellishment, dramatic bows, and sculptural floral details added texture throughout, while each look maintained a remarkable sense of clarity.
What stood out most was Piccioli's ability to make couture feel deeply personal. Beneath the craftsmanship and dramatic silhouettes was a collection centered on the woman wearing the clothes. There was emotion in every look, creating pieces that felt expressive rather than intimidating. For a debut, it was a confident introduction that honored Balenciaga's history while opening an exciting new chapter for the house.
Among all the looks, below are the ones that stood out as our favorites, best capturing the optimism, artistry, and modern romance of the collection.
