With Spring 2027, Rachel Scott seems to be getting deeper into the process of figuring out what Proenza Schouler looks like through her eyes. Taking over a house with such a recognizable identity was never going to be something resolved in a season or two, and this collection feels refreshingly open about that. There is a sense of exploration running through it, almost as though Scott is trying on different ideas of who her Proenza Schouler woman might be. At times she is polished and distinctly New York, at others softer, more sensual, or much more relaxed. What connects it all is a noticeable refinement from Scott's earlier work for the house. The clothes feel looser and more effortless, but there is still enough tension between the different ideas to remind you that this is a designer actively discovering her own relationship with the brand.
That looseness is one of the things I enjoyed most about the collection. There is still a very New York practicality at its center, but the clothes feel less controlled and more natural on the body. Tailoring sits more freely, proportions relax, and draping brings movement to pieces that might otherwise feel quite proper. There is a real sense of effortlessness here, but it never comes at the expense of refinement. Scott seems particularly interested in the space between looking put together and looking as though you haven't spent too much time thinking about it. Some looks lean more sophisticated, others feel almost casually thrown together, and that variation becomes part of the collection's charm.
Texture continues to be another important part of Scott's language. It has always been central to her work at Diotima, where craft and the hand of the maker are deeply embedded in the clothes, but at Proenza Schouler she is finding different ways to use it. Rather than overwhelming the silhouettes, texture gives seemingly simple pieces greater depth and personality. What I find especially appealing is how easily you can imagine pulling the collection apart. A jacket does not need its runway styling to make sense, nor does a dress or skirt feel dependent on the rest of the look. These feel like pieces a woman could bring into what she already owns and interpret entirely in her own way, which only adds to the relaxed feeling running through the season.
Perhaps what makes Spring 2027 most interesting is that Scott doesn't seem interested in giving us a finished answer just yet. You can almost see her working through different versions of the Proenza Schouler woman as the collection unfolds, testing how polished she should be, how sensual, how relaxed, and how much of Scott's own design language can enter the picture without losing what made the house compelling in the first place. That exploration gives the collection a certain honesty. Some ideas feel more resolved than others, but that almost makes watching this chapter more interesting. Spring 2027 feels more refined, loose, and effortless, while still leaving room for Scott to continue defining exactly who her woman at Proenza Schouler will become.
