Celebrating 25 years in business could easily have become an exercise in looking back, but Rachel Comey had a much more interesting idea for Spring 2027. Instead, she turned her attention to Rosalyn Drexler, the late New York painter, playwright, novelist, and former professional wrestler whose wonderfully unconventional life became the starting point for the collection. Presented at the historic Judson Theatre in Greenwich Village, the show felt deeply connected to the creative downtown New York world that has surrounded Comey throughout her career. Drexler was part of that world herself, making the choice feel less like an anniversary theme and more like a celebration of the kind of independent, curious women Comey has always designed for.
Drexler's presence ran throughout the collection without ever becoming too literal. Models carried her books, imagery connected to her years at the Judson appeared across tops and skirts, and her colorful artwork helped inform the collection's vibrant palette. Even some of the more playful details came with a story. Studded shirts and shorts nodded to Drexler's brief wrestling career under the name Rosa Carlo, while doodled T shirts had the charm of something you might discover tucked away in an artist's studio. Comey took all of these references and filtered them through her own slightly offbeat way of dressing, allowing the inspiration to give the clothes personality rather than turning them into costume.
That sense of individuality really came through in the styling. Polo knits were paired with running shorts, polka dot mini skirts wrapped around the body, and chenille tank dresses were layered over delicate lace camisoles. There was always something a little unexpected happening, but never so much that the clothes lost their wearability. Even when a more traditional matching jacket and trouser look appeared toward the end, Comey disrupted it with a shirt covered in long strands of sequin fringe layered between tulle. What I enjoyed most was how naturally all of these ideas lived together. The collection could move between sporty, feminine, artistic, and slightly eccentric without ever feeling like it was trying to fit neatly into one category.
For an anniversary collection, there is something especially charming about Comey choosing to celebrate another fascinating New York woman rather than putting herself at the center of the story. After 25 years, she seems less interested in reminding us of her greatest hits than in showing us what continues to inspire her, and that says quite a lot about the longevity of the brand. Rachel Comey has always made clothes for women who enjoy getting dressed in their own way, mixing unexpected pieces and allowing personal style to evolve rather than chasing whatever happens to be trending. Spring 2027 feels like a celebration of exactly that spirit.
